Wall Street Journal: Peter Barbey, the new owner of the Village Voice, bought the alt-weekly for an undisclosed sum earlier this month. Barbey, who also owns the Reading (Pa.) Eagle newspaper, said he plans to get rid of the Voice’s escort ads. “It’s not the kind of advertising that fits where we want go.” Though Barbey hopes to use his own funding to turn the paper around, he said he is also looking for a business model that would keep newspapers from depending on wealthy owners like himself. He hasn’t found it yet. “I can keep the Voice going, but if that’s the only solution, then only the wealthy will support free speech. I don’t want that world.”
