Wired: BuzzFeed is among the 120 businesses participating in NewCo New York, a two-day open house for tech startups in the Big Apple. The concept is the brainchild of John Battelle, whom Internet historians will remember as the guy who programmed the Web 2.0 Summit, an annual conference launched in 2004 as the tech world recovered from the dot-com crash. Battelle’s latest venture is a perfect tribute to the current moment. Though it launched in San Francisco in 2012, it has become decentralized and massive, convening small groups for onsite visits in 16 cities during multi-day festival-style events around the world. Next year, Battelle expects to operate in twice as many places, including Istanbul and Amsterdam.
