Columbia Journalism Review: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has rolled out a podcast modeled on “Serial,” the smash hit spin-off of “This American Life.” The AJC’s “Breakdown” explores the case of Justin Chapman, a man convicted of murder in the small west Georgia town of Bremen. The Cox-owned newspaper admits to spending “tens of thousands of dollars” on the project. Why make that kind of investment? The AJC has been trying to figure out ways to get paid subscribers to engage more deeply with the newspaper’s digital offerings. Each episode is available first to paid subscribers. “It’s a really interesting form of journalism.”
